Husky and Medley
Kurosada. Husky and Medley. Trans. 4chan. Japan: 2ch.net, 2008. Scanlation. 12 November 2010.
Medium: manga
Genre: yuri, shoujo ai, school life
Synopsis:
Medley attends an all-girls high school. Finding herself attracted to her classmate Husky, Medley tries to discover the girl's weakness in hopes of becoming closer with her. Developed into a manga from an internet thread, this true story explores the development of the girls' relationship over a couple of months.
Notes:
This is an excellent example of how technology may be utilized in students' development of multiliteracies (see Chandler-Olcott and Mahar "Tech-Savviness" Meets Multiliteracies: Exploring Adolescent Girls' Technology-Mediated Literacy Practices), not to mention being a very creative project in general. I was really impressed by the fact that this is the work of a high school student. The story itself is cute, though not gripping. I was not bored, but I probably wouldn't read it again and again. It would be an interesting case study for youth sexuality, since it offers an honest portrayal of the lesbian relationship of the two girls with the social pressures they face, their own insecurities, and their mutual attraction. Too, might be useful for research into the influence of popular media on youth relationships as the girls' sexual explorations are sometimes inspired by such outside influence. Not licensed in English at time of reading.
